TMX Post Trade has announced the successful start of repo trading using standardised Government of Canada (GoC) General Collateral (GC) basket on the Canadian Collateral Management Service (CCMS) platform.
This milestone — the first phase of a multi-stage rollout — marks an important step towards improving collateral mobility in the Canadian repo market with full automation of repo collateral and unlimited real-time substitution.
According to the firm, the standardised GoC GC basket will support more efficient liquidity management and encourage broader adoption of CCMS, Canada’s first triparty service offered by TMX Group and Clearstream.
Collectively, the CCMS triparty platform and GC baskets will strengthen the resilience, efficiency, and overall functioning of Canada’s repo market.
Standardised general collateral baskets will be introduced in the coming months, including Provincial GC, Canada Mortgage Bonds GC, National Housing Association Mortgage-Backed Securities GC, Public Sector Entities GC, and Corporate GC baskets.
In an online statement, Steve Everett, chief commercial officer, CDS & Post Trade Innovations at TMX, said: “This is much more than a product milestone. It is another foundational building block for the future of Canada’s secured funding market.
“When we first envisioned what is now CCMS, the ambition was to create infrastructure that could evolve with the market — improving collateral mobility today while creating the foundations for what comes next.
“The launch of the standardised GoC GC basket takes us another step forward, creating important building blocks for GC pooling, greater market liquidity and, ultimately, the evolution of pooled repo clearing in Canada.”
