The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has confirmed that the first consolidated tape for shares and exchange traded funds (ETFs) is now operational across the European Union.
EuroCTP has officially commenced operations as the sole authorised consolidated tape provider for equities and ETFs, after being approved by ESMA in July.
By bringing together pre-trade and post-trade data into a singular electronic stream, the infrastructure aims to support market participants in accessing market information and contribute to informed investment decisions.
The tape consolidates data from over 130 sources across the EU.
Data contributors onboarded at launch represent 87 per cent of the target scope, by notional trade value, with additional contributors to be onboarded progressively.
Eglantine Desautel, CEO of EuroCTP, says: “The consolidated tape is a long-standing objective of Europe's Savings and Investments Union, and today it becomes a reality.
“Fair and equal access to market data is fundamental to well-functioning capital markets, and the tape will play a central role in delivering that across the European Union.
“Launching is the culmination of more than two years of design, build, and engagement with stakeholders whose contribution has been essential to ensuring the tape is ready to serve the market.”
Eric Böss, global head of trading at Allianz Global Investor, adds: “Today's launch of the consolidated tape gives the market a single, reliable view of trading activity across venues, something European markets have lacked until now.
“It is a welcome addition that will bring greater clarity to how execution is assessed across venues.”
