Cboe Clear Europe has been selected as the central counterparty (CCP) for Nasdaq Iceland, with implementation planned for 2028, subject to regulatory approvals.
The move is expected to support the continued development of Iceland’s capital markets by introducing central clearing and bringing the market closer to international standards.
Central clearing is expected to strengthen risk management while improving operational and capital efficiency and increasing accessibility for both domestic and international investors.
The appointment also supports Cboe Clear Europe’s strategy of expanding its venue coverage across European markets.
The pan-European CCP currently provides clearing services to 55 cash equity trading venues and market segments across Europe.
This allows market participants to consolidate their activity through a single CCP, regardless of where trades are executed.
According to Cboe Clear Europe, this can provide benefits including multilateral netting, reduced counterparty risk, and more streamlined post-trade processing.
The firm said the expansion is intended to support the development of more competitive, efficient, and integrated capital markets across Europe.
Vikesh Patel, global head of Clearing and president, Cboe Clear Europe, says: “We are delighted to have been selected as the CCP for Nasdaq Iceland, bringing the benefits of central clearing to a new market and further expanding our pan-European clearing network.
“The introduction of central clearing will help align Iceland with international standards, support the long-term growth of its capital markets, and furthers our mission to support the development of more efficient, competitive, and integrated capital markets across Europe.
“We look forward to partnering with Nasdaq Iceland and market participants to deliver a successful implementation and support the market's continued growth.”
